Hi Beth,

Good for you - if the book goal seems like a marathon right now, then I'm sure you're up for it!

I've one BHAG (Big Hairy Audacious Goal, a phrase coined by Jim Collins in 'Built to Last') for 2010 that I'll publicly commit to here:

- Write and Publish a book. Topic: Mid-Career Change and Personal Growth (Working Idea). Source material is my blog.

I met a self-esteem coach (http://www.livmiyagawa.com/) in Tokyo last week and was inspired by her work and the fact that she's self-published (lulu) and is also listed on Amazon.com

Here's a great Will Smith tribute video all about talents and skills - and how to develop and use them. Pay attention to the story about building a wall.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OLN2k0b3g70

@Andrea - check out habitchange.com
They have a very neat idea for helping people set and follow through on goals...

I'm with you! I spent a few days before Christmas working on goals for the new year, and this year I'm determined to accomplish them. One thing I'm going to do differently this year is to actually go back and re-read my goals on a weekly basis. Usually I just make them and hide them away somewhere, thus forgetting what they were.

Write it because you have something to say that needs to get out of you. That doesn't mean you should give up on the idea of publishing, it just means that putting your voice and thoughts down on paper will bring rewards beyond the act of creating a book. Besides, I know you're a great writer so I can't wait to read the book!

Unless you always wanted to write a book so you could be rich and famous for having done so, the possibility that you may not achieve those things through your writing shouldn't be a reason for not following through on it.

Good luck Beth, I know you'll get that book written!

De'ja vu!
I know how to make good goals...specific, measurable, time-constrained, achievable. I know how to list tasks that will provide the necessary steps to achieve the desired goal. I know how to determine what those task are, find references and support and research validating my choices. What I can't seem to effectively do is hold myself accountable. I give up and make excuses and get busy and forget and ....blah, blah, blah. So that is my "resolution": to find ways to be accountable to me.
