Avenue Z Virtual Food Drive FAQs
Q&A about the Virtual Food Drive:
- You’re trying to collect ONE TON, which is 2,000 pounds, but you’re counting in bags. How does that work?
I decided that a bag of canned and boxed goods would weigh about 10 pounds. - Did you check to make sure?
Nope. - When someone says, “I’m donating stuff to our food bank,” you give them 1 Bag. How do you know?
I don’t know. I’m just guessing. But if someone wants to come back and tell me exactly how much “stuff” he donated, I’ll make it right. - How can you verify that people are donating what they say?
I can’t. If someone comes on and says he’s donating and then doesn’t, he’ll have to live with the guilt forever. - Why don’t you have nice graphics and one of those cool fundraising thermometers so we can see the progress? This effort looks a little haphazard.
I’m a perfectionist, and I did want to build something grand. But then I realized I didn’t want the pursuit of perfection to get in the way of action. So I just jumped right in, lame graphics and all. - Sometimes people say, “I donated last week” and you don’t count them. What’s up with that?
My goal is really to get people to commit who haven’t already committed, not just to count what’s been done. But I’m so amazed at the generosity that everyone has already shown. Now to just get the others to pitch in!

Hi Beth-
This is awesome!!! And so are you for this gesture!!!
I had shared with you the news that my hubby had said we were donating our Thanksgiving turkey, “I said No, we aren’t – not without the rest of the meal that goes along with it.” I went and bought a broiler pan, 2 kinds of potatoes, beans, cream of mushroom soup, fried onions (who has Thanksgiving dinner without green bean casserole, right?),big bag of animal crackers, big bag of my favorite cookies, some chocolates, soda and milk, loaf of bread, paper towels and other things to fill up the 2 bags. My hubby should have known, my philosophy has always been, “Donate something equal or better than what you would get or make for yourself”. He called a local church to see if there was a specific family that needed help. Yes, there was — and the lady at the church gave him a short history of a family they have been helping get back on their feet after a Mother’s illness.
A little personal history, I was little girl and my family was very poor (3 of us living out of a station wagon at one point poor) and we were helped by the Salvation Army. And when I was 8 or 9 I had a Barbie with no clothes (I’m sure it was donated to me also) and my neighbor lady sewed me a bunch of clothes for her. She told my Mother that I was so appreciative to just have a Barbie that she had to make the clothes for me. I have never forgotten my roots or the kidness of that one woman. Paying it forward is not an option for me, I feel many people did that for me.
You can count on me for a 10 – 12 lb ham and 20 pounds of groceries before Christmas.
***Please help Beth DOUBLE her GOAL and don’t just clean out your cupboards, give nothing that you wouldn’t eat yourself***

There appears to be a rip in the virtual food drive time/space continuum — two contributions of bags are counted as “Bag 31,” including my pledge.
Either that, or my reputation for slacking on charitable efforts has reached San Diego.

Beth, I will commit to donating 30 pounds of non parishable foods to St. Vincent de Paul to help feed the homeless. I have volunteered at this facility in downtown Phoenix and they serve families full meals every single day of the week.
Happy Holidays, Nancy J
