A cool little Jing thing
Have you ever done a screen capture by pressing Print Screen, pasting it somewhere, editing it and sending it off? One of my favorite new (free!) tools is Jing, a little application from TechSmith, which makes the screen capture process insanely easy.
Jing sits on your screen at all times in the form of a little yellow sun. You can click on the capture button to bring up cross hairs that allow you to capture the part of the screen you want. Then you can either create an image that you can add notes to, or a movie up to five minutes long! It rocks.
Another cool thing? Once you have the capture you want, you can save it to your computer or throw it up to your own private account at screencast.com. Then you send a link to see it.

Hey thanks for the heads up about this little tool. I am working with a designer for my website and lots of times I want to show him just one little thing on some other site, don’t want to send a link, so this is really helpful. Have a nice day.

That’s exactly the kind of thing I use it for.
Thanks for stopping by!

Cool, I downloaded it. I get tired of Snag-it, although it’s good, this might be nice and easy to use.

These are the people who make Snag-It as well as Camtasia, which my old company used to use for longer webcasts.

Beth: I like how you’re always finding neat things like this!

Beth,
Thanks for bringing this new little tool into my life. It is so easy to use.
I am loving the little video feature and thought of a cool way to incorporate it into my portfolio web site.
Actually, I just used it to go over some web site stats with a potential client. What fun!

So, I downloaded this, and then I had to have HP help me with something unrelated and now the part that sits on the screen doesn’t work. Like the flash animation and commands aren’t working. So, now I’m dealing with Techsmith tech support and I tell you, they are testing my patience. I’ll probably blog about this on my own blog, but why on earth do the tech support people not read your blinkin emails before they respond? I told them I had uninstalled it and reinstalled it and they come back with that as their brilliant suggestion. I told them I won’t waste their time if they don’t waste MINE. ARGH. I’m irritated. Can you tell?

Claire,
My little sun didn’t work from time to time as well. I don’t know what the deal was, but finally it settled in. I never did contact support, but one of my clients was very frustrated with installing SnagIt and the support issues there, too. That’s why he wouldn’t buy SnagIt for me to use as I worked on some of his documentation.
Sure sorry it’s pissing you off. Blargh.

[...] This clever little program was designed to be completely unremovable by naughty employees who didn’t want corporate big brother software on their personal machines. I downloaded uninstallers, consulted technology experts on my favorite listserv, tried to revert using Windows System Restore, left three messages with Zihtec’s help desk (no response)…. I actually was able to remove most of it, but a little remnant is still here. And the kicker — the remnant blocks some of my other programs and prevents me from being able to use Windows Task Manager to stop cranky programs. It even broke my Jing! [...]
