On the MySpace signup page, do the birth years even go back to 1968?
The same person who encouraged me to
start my own blog swore to me that I had to be on MySpace
and Facebook.
These social networking sites have become as necessary as a cell phone for
anyone under the age of 30, especially for single folks looking to meet other
single folks. But I’m much closer to 40 than to 30, and I can’t imagine they’ll
even let me on.
I guess the fears that keep me off the
social networking sites are the same ones that keep me out of bars at happy
hour. I’ve tried looking available in a bar a few times, but I either feel like
a school counselor assigned to chaperone a party or a reporter doing a story on
“The Life Cycle of a One-Night Stand.” A couple of times I brought along a book
or a journal so I didn’t look like a lady at a bar waiting for something to
happen. I ended up looking like a bookworm with a drinking problem, perhaps.
Anyway, I’m not good at the bar scene.
I’m determined, however, to jump into the
social networking parade. I’m actually a technology nut and an early adopter of
every new gadget. I Skype. I blog. I Blackberry.
I Evite.
I track my runs with GPS and upload them to Nike+. I teach computer courses, for gosh
sakes. Why am I afraid of MySpace?

So, did you ever get a MySpace account???? I am OldBooksNewBooks on MySpace. I just signed up for your newsletter. I’m reading your blog (backwards, of course) and enjoying all of it. I’ll check in again later….I’m off to teach basic internet at the local community college this afternoon….

Rae in Nebraska,
Ha! This was a goal I never achieved. I have so much fun with the blog and so little time to have fun that I’ve abandoned other social networking types for right now. I think I have something up there, but it’s completely empty, and my only friend is the MySpace guy who is everybody’s “friend” — their customer service or whatever.
I’ll have to check yours out — great title. In the meantime, I’m glad you discovered Ave Z, and I hope you’ll stay.
